Not many know that one of the most celebrated Case Study Houses is open to the public. I am not talking about the Eames House, or Case Study House #8, but about the Stahl House, better known as Case Study House #22 which was designed by Pierre Koenig in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles. Its history is stunning. Carlotta Stahl bought the lot on which Koenig built the cantilevered foundation and prefabricated structure in glass and steel for $13,000. Koenig submitted the project to John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture Magazine and it was accepted for the Magazine’s ambitious Case Study Program. The rest is history. The quintessential photograph taken by famed architecture photographer Julius Shulman in 1960 has often referred to as the most iconic image of Los Angeles (above). Today, Case Study House #22 is open to the public.
