In that same session on collecting contemporary design this morning, Carole Hochman, Director of Barry Friedman Ltd was talking about French designer Ingrid Donat, whose furniture is represented by the gallery. Donat creates furniture in bronze, parchment, and other materials in processes more typical to the French Art Deco era than to our time.
Her sculptural furniture is cast in the lost-wax technique and shaped in forms and textures inspired by Armand-Albert Rateau, tribal tattoos, African art, and the flat patterns devised by Gustav Klimt. Donat engraves the bronzes, paints the upholstery and treats the wood, making her work a testimony to the presence of French artisanal craftsmanship in contemporary design.
