I am going to devote the next session of the program Collecting Design to Italian mid-century design. While the stylish, mass-produced design has earned Italy a key position in the world of contemporary design, the most fascinating period in the history of Italian design was the postwar era. During this period, architects and designers were in a privileged position in Italy, and their role was that of intellectuals who sought to use the power of industry to educate the masses for a better life. Italy had extraordinary success in evolving stunning forms of objects and in encouraging the emergence of a postwar generation of superstar designers. My guest Nick Kilner will share his passion and expertise.
