On Saturday, I set to have an interview with London-based designer Marc Newson to discuss his upcoming show at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. But in addition to this first solo museum show of his work in the US, Marc will be in NY on November 23rd to raise funds towards the fight against AIDS in Africa. For that event, together with another icon, Apple designer Jony Ive, Marc designed a unique desk, called (RED), which together with 40 other rare and diverse items, will be auctioned by Sotheby's to raise money for The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This desk has been precision machined using 2600lbs of 6061 grade aluminum. One hundred individually crafted tiles form the desk top, with each piece hand polished and anodized with a uniquely developed shade of grey, and is numbered edition 01/01.
