Previewed a little beautiful show entitled “Living in Style: Five Centuries of Interior Design,” at the Met this morning. Through prints, drawings, manuscripts, and a handful objects, all spanned five centuries – from the Renaissance courts through the mid twentieth century -- it illustrates the history of the interior and its stylistic modes. While interior decor first emerged in Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries,
it came to reflect ever-changing currents of taste and fashion, and has remained for the most part, attached to the evolution of architecture. The artists, architecture, and designers who created the interiors on display have brought ingenuity, beauty, and wit to the arena of interior décor. This is a small show that brings to light the story of the interior, which so often remains untold.
