In the next week session of the program Collecting Design, I am going to speak about the market for collectible contemporary design. One of the objects that signifies the emergence of this market is certainly Marc Newson’s Pod of Drawers, which he designed in 1987 of fiberglass form clad with riveted sheet aluminum. In this phase of his early career, Newson expressed an interest in reviving old form. In this case, it is the Chiffonnier, which French Art Deco designer Andre Groult created for the 1925 Paris exposition and which is today a part of the collection of the Museé Des Arts Décoratifs. In 1925 this piece, veneered in shagreen, was displayed at his Chambre de Madame.
