One Morning at One Vandam

Thank you, One Vandam, Sean Murphy Turner, and Britt and Damian from Studio BD for hosting the kick off of my program ‘Design and Decorative Arts in NYC’ in the breathtaking penthouse A of One Vandam, at the heart of SoHo. I cannot think of a better place to host a program that illuminates the best of the best, highbrow design. The limestone-and-glass tower, designed by BKSK Architects is so well integrated in its built fabric, the old brick buildings of the surrounding neighborhoods, that you don’t realize at first that yous stand in front of a new building. Then, when you walk into the triplex Penthouse A, with the most spectacular views of Downtown Manhattan all seen through the glass walls and when standing in one of the numerous terraces, when looking up the staircase to the triple-height ceiling, then you realize that you stand in a sophisticated, cutting edge, stunning home. The interiors, created by Studio DB, feature a rich mix of contemporary and vintage pieces of furniture by such mid-century figures as Edward Wormley, Paul McCobb, and Harvey Probber. I loved the various treated materials throughout the apartment, manifesting details and craftsmanship, from the honed stone, to the hand-glazed tiles, the bleached walnut kitchen, the luxurious textiles, the extraordinary wallpaper. This morning was a perfect celebration of another season full of great design in the program Design an Decorative Arts in NYC. Photography Alexandra Rowley
