Thank you, Chris Hill, for bringing to my attention the extraordinary work of Birmingham- based artist Theresa Nguyen. This young silversmith, a graduate from the Birmingham Jewelry School, is passionate about silver, creating organic forms in a meticulous poetic way. They are natural, but they are also abstract. I was surprised to read that Nguyen lives in urban environment, as her forms represent love for nature and a through exploration of the wonder of natural world.
I am always interested in contemporary designers creating decorative arts while revisiting traditions, yet taking them to new horizons. This work, which is mostly hammered and crafted in the technique of sinking and stretching the metal from flat silver discs into flowers, leaves, and other wonders of nature is not only personal, but also departs from notions of Art Nouveau.
