One of the experiences provided by Design Miami which I find particularly exciting and refreshing is the ability to view design created in far-away places, not typically shown in the triangle of NY/London/Paris. Last year, I was introduced for the first time to Southern Guild, which is a design gallery based in Cape Town. The gallery which presents design created in South Africa, focuses on objects that retain local identities. they demonstrate the manner in which contemporary designers have utilized local crafts and materials in creating genuine design, often features story telling, political allusion, as well as historical and cultural references. Here are some of the pieces that Southern Guild will be showing at the 10th edition of Design Miami, opens next week.
