Michael Coffey, one of the most talented representatives of the American Studio Movement today, is a woodworker who creates sculptural furniture in his studio in Massachusetts. His pieces are powerful, sensuous, graceful, elegant, and mostly characterized by fabulous scale and proportions. A pupil of Wendell Castle and Wharton Esherick, Coffey has crafted furniture since 1967, participated in numerous exhibitions, and his pieces are considered collectible, offered periodically by some of the world’s major auction houses. He achieves his signature fluidity by employing a superb craftsmanship. Wright, the Chicago-based auction house offers Coffey’s Pegasus Coffee Table, which he crafted in 1985 of wood and acrylic (above).
