Visiting Villa Savoye in Poisy, France. No other house captures the legacy of Le Corbusier more than Villa Savoye, which came to represent his concept of the the house as "machine a habiter," or a machine for living (in).

I am looking forward to the lecture on collecting American modernist design of the interwar era tomorrow. The period was characterized by a fascination with the skyscraper and with the entire urban experience. Artists and designers, searching for a new vocabulary with which to express the excitement and optimism of the age, seized upon the image of the skyscraper and utilized it not only in paintings and sculpture but also in everything from furniture to fabrics, and it is New York that epitomized the ultimate American urban experience with its setback skyscrapers, which became the unique American symbol of modernity.
The art of the toy has been thoroughly explored and practiced during the first decades of the 20th century, but seems to have disappeared in our day. Yet, the German toymaker's Renate Müller and her collaborator Bernd Ruckert whose work was discovered by R 20th Century, are still practicing this lost art. Now the Gallery has announced an opening of the second solo show which will feature new, exclusive designs and an interactive play area. There is something optimistic and totally naive about these couture toys and the way they are handcrafted, that always bring smile to my face.
Palais Stoclet was the most famous example of the Gesamtkunstwek associated with the Wiener Werkstatte, the embodiment of the “total work of art,” and one of the major collaborative projects of this legendary company. Josef Hoffman, the founder believed that decoration and architecture should complement each other, and thus the building was created as a whole, both interior and exterior as components of a complete work of art. Every room was designed as an adventure into a unique experience in its own right and many artistic means were employed into the design.
When furniture is made of books.
For the New Science Museum in Panama, Frank Gehry has introduced color to his signature architectural expression. The museum, due to open in the summer, comes to tell the story of the isthmus and the diverse species who live in the region. The departure from his typical metallic facades into bold red, yellow, and blue is meant to reflect the local tropical landscape.
