The name Axel Salto (1889-1961) has become an integral part of many design auctions in recent years. The Danish modernist who recognized meeting with Pablo Picasso and Henri Moore as steppingstones in his long and successful career, began creating ceramics following his participation in the famed 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. His distinctive style, bodies fired in green-yellow and brownish glazes, is rooted in the worlds of primitive art and nature. While Salto’s work did not reach beyond his native region during his lifetime, it has come to attract design loves worldwide, fetching six figures by such auction houses as Phillips, which Nordic design sales have come to cement his work in the marketplace.
