Registration to the program Collection Design is open now. In the lecture discussing collecting French postwar design, I will host Alberto Aquilino, Director of 1950, who will highlight the territory of Jean Prouve and Charlotte Perriand. The two worked closely together during the 1940s and 1950s, challenging social issues of housing, while creating unique aesthetics that came to shape postwar French design. They shared a desire for modernity, a fascination for new materials and technology, and the attempt to glorifying industry. Social progress, to them was connected to modern design, thus they sought to develop mass produced, low-cost and “good” designed furniture and products, devising a signature style which grew out of their social sensibilities. The furniture they created came to play roles in the lives of millions in France and in its colonies, and plays today a central role in the international marketplace of collectible design.
