Last night at Sotheby's I saw for the first time icons of modern design, which will be offered in the Important Design sale of December. I am talking about the executive desk and chair from the Johnson Wax Headquarters, the world headquarters and administration building of S. C. Johnson & Son in Wisconsin, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the company's president, Herbert F. Johnson and completed in 1939. Wright also designed the furniture for the building, in a streamlining, marking a departure from his old style into modernism. The last time this desk was offered for public sale was nearly 30 years ago. in 1985, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation granted Cassina an exclusive license to produce this desk and chair. Whey they are no longer produced by Cassina, most of the examples in the market (including that in the image below), are from this reproduction venture.
