Gaetano Pesce, one of the foremost design legends of our time is the focus of a new show at the Allouche Gallery in New York entitled “Gaetono Pesce Iconic Works: 1967-2015.” While design today is largely conceptual, I like to think of Pesce as the father of the poetic, or conceptual design movement. The show, which features maquettes, furniture, vases, and drawings by the visionary architect/designer/thinker, demonstrates that to Pesce, challenging dogmas is a central force and that design to him is a form of commentary on reality, often serves as an expression of political statements. Humor and irony are present in his breathtaking pieces, which are largely crafted of foam, resin, and urethane, making you thing differently about design and its place in our world. “Art and design should be a service to the people,” he suggests, and “an object should express more than beauty, nice form and function - it should be subversive and express a political point of view.”
