This week's session in the program Collecting Design will be devoted to collecting French design of the 60's and 70s. One of the key figures in the new "Art of Living Movement" was Pierre Cardin, whose furniture reflected the avant-garde, Space-Age style just like his fashion. The first couturier to look to Japan as a market for high fashion, it was Japanese aesthetics that also informed the style of his furniture design.
One of the designers in his team when first creating furniture in 1971 was Philippe Starck. The furniture pieces were produced in limited edition, and were called “Utilitarian Sculptures.”
