The Space-Age Movement was particularly strong in Southern California, where Googie architecture came to capture the imagery of the space age for upscale lifestyle. I read that the Volcano House, one of the most iconic masterpieces of the period is on the maket for sale. Once owned by Huell Howser, the late producer and host, who chose to live on a spaceship atop a volcanic cone, it sits on 60 Mojave Desert acres, and with its multiple viewing of the surrounding mountains, it was the ultimate metaphor of spaceships. Constructed in 1968, it is located in the desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, it was originally commissioned by aircraft-mechanics genius Vard Wallace as a personal retreat, and designed by prolific architect Harold Bissner, Jr. With high curved ceilings, open floor plan, and the multiple sliding glass doors that provide access to the viewing deck that wraps around the house, it is a stunning testimony to the glorious 60s.
