Some of my friends consider George Nakashima’s Conoid Chair as the best-designed chair of the 20th century. Having lived with Conoid Chairs around my dinner table for years, it has a special place in the memory of our family. From collecting point of view, I believed that it is a great moment to acquire the Conoid Chair, since its current value is identical to priced it fetched in 2006, and about half of what it was sold around 2008. From design point of view, its vocabulary tells the story of an architect who designed furniture not like a designer, but like an architect, and whose respect for the wood stood at the core of his philosophy. The more valuable examples are those crafted out of a single board of wood, or those made of exotic woods, like rosewood.
