The Memphis Group, the legendary Italian design collective which was founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass in 1981, changed the face of design history. Creating its own furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass, and metal object and incorporating colorful plastic laminate in its asymmetrical objects, Memphis manifested the Anti-Design Movement that came to challenge notions of taste and the authority of highly aestheticized modernism. Memphis held its first group show in 1981 to coincide with the annual Milan Salone del Mobile of that year and had members from Milan and from outside Italy. Now, the NYC gallery Koenig & Clinton features “The Memphis Group,” an exhibition of furniture and lighting by the Postmodernist collective.
