Ever since masterpieces of mid-century modern architecture have come to attract design collectors, the collectible design market has expanded to include this fascinating territory, contributing to preservation of modernist buildings. This fall, the Chicago-based auction house Wright will be offering for sale the iconic Stillman House, which Marcel Breuer designed in Litchfield, Connecticut, constructed between 1951 and 1953, and which is particularly known for the mural wall in the pool by Alexander Calder and for the mural by Xanti Schawinsky in the interior. Rufus and Leslie Stillman, who commissioned the house sold it to the current owners in 2009. The relatively small house, typical to mid-century residences, was designed in Breuer distinctive long-house style.
