Single-owner sale is always an exciting moment for auction houses, and particularly when it comes to design. Sotheby’s will offer the Warshawsky Collection, a landmark collection of Tiffany and Prewar Desig on May 19th. As collecting has been a passion for Chicago businessman Roy Warshawsky and his wife Sarita, the two assembled a distinctive collection of works from the 1960s through the 1990s. It not only highlighted by an encyclopedic selection of Tiffany Studios works that spans every artistic discipline of the famed firm from leaded glass lighting and windows, through favrile glass, enamels, pottery, and bronze goods, which makes it the most quintessential offering of Tiffany to come to auction since 1995, but they were also interested in European and American Prewar Design by such artists as Archibald Knox, Louis Sullivan and René Lalique, which were collected by Warshawsky with curatorial approach, representing the connoisseur’s eye before the start of the vogue for collecting postwar design.
