My journey in collecting Nakashima's furniture will be at the center of the next lecture in the program Collecting Design on Monday, December 9 and Tuesday December 10. I first met George Nakashima at his studio in New Hope on the hottest day of the summer of 1987. He was sitting in the showroom like a guru talking to clients. I found him thoughtful, observant, spiritual, rooted, and humane, and I immediately joined his group of admirers. You can read all the books you want, you can attend designer showcases, lectures, exhibitions. But when you went to Nakashima studio, you understood design. I thought his visionary furniture was as genuine as its maker and from that day in July of 1987 Nakashima has become profoundly influential in my own life.
